Issues with Netgear Networking Hardware

You may find it difficult to reliably use a wireless connection with the Netgear DG834PN wireless ADSL modem/router. In particular, wireless connections may appear as “Local Only” in Windows Vista.

To resolve this, apply the latest firmware upgrade.

  1. The DG834v2 may intermittently drop packets when using firmware version 3.01.32. This may be most noticeable from dropouts when sending or receiving large emails or using services which require constant connectivity, such as Remote Desktop or pcAnywhere. The service will skip some packets, detect a broken connection and abort. This break in service does not appear in the router's logs as a drop of line sync. Downgrading the router's firmware to version 3.01.25 restores reliability.

  2. Early versions of the firmware for this router did not allow LAN clients to connect to the external IP address of the router. This was then fixed, but the problem was re-introduced in version 3.01.32. The workaround is to modify the hosts file on each workstation to map any domain names which refer to the external IP address to a local address.

  3. A peculiar issue has been observed with this router. The modem was achieving line sync and internet connectivity, but the attached workstations could not access the internet, and the inbound firewall rules were not working. The router was configured to allow remote management from a single IP address, on a non-standard port (eg. not 8080). It was not possible to connect to the management console of the router through this port via the WAN link, but it was possible to connect on port 80, and from any client on the internet. In other words, it was treating external IP addresses as local and accepting connections to the management console on port 80, which is the standard port for LAN connections. Thus anybody who browsed to the IP address would be presented with the login prompt for the router's management console.

    Neither rebooting, nor upgrading to the latest firmware resolved the issue. However, after a factory reset and manually re-entering the settings (as opposed to reloading a saved settings file), the router behaved properly.

    The moral of the story is that all routers must have their default password changed.

  1. The Netgear DG834v3 ADSL modem/router may attempt to update Dynamic DNS too frequently, or when not necessary.

    To resolve this, apply the latest firmware upgrade.

  2. This router works much more reliably with the latest firmware (4.01.30 or better). Some units ship with a firmware revision which has difficulty negotiating with some DSLAMs, or may be incapable of holding a stable connection. This may be worse for ADSL2-capable DSLAMs, but the DSL service need not be ADSL2.

  1. VoIP calls may not work properly, particularly Skype and Internode Nodephone calls. The logs show entries such as:

    Also, TeamViewer sessions may be slow, with a lot of lag or latency.

    Enable Disable Port Scan and DOS Protection under WAN Setup.

  2. Some models may ship with incorrect default values for VPI and VCI, which means the modems will not negotiate with Australian ISPes. Set them to 8 and 35 respectively.

The Netgear FVS318 router may lose internet connectivity routinely, although the attached modem still shows DSL synchronisation.

To resolve this, set the Idle Timeout to 0 under Basic Settings in the router setup.

FVS318v3

The Netgear FVS318v3 has a maximum throughput between the WAN and LAN ports of about 12.5Mbit, although the WAN port is actually a 10/100Mbit capable ethernet port.

WN2000RPT

The web-based interface of this device does not work properly with Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, and thus cannot be configured. Use an earlier version of Internet Explorer or Firefox instead.

Other Netgear Issues

If you are installing a Netgear device to replace an existing unit, you may find the Netgear's configuration pages do not function properly, such as the Configuration Wizard. This may be resolvable by issuing the following command at a command prompt:

ipconfig /flushdns

(Use an elevated command prompt if using Windows Vista or above.)

Using the Apple iPhone with Netgear Routers

The iPhone seems to work best with the SSID broadcast, so the router option Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID) should be enabled.
