Error Applying Exchange Server 2007 Service Packs or Rollups

Service Packs

When attempting to install Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3 on a Windows Small Business Server 2008 system, you may receive the following errors:

Hub Transport Role Prerequisites — Failed
Error: Setup cannot continue with the upgrade because the 'DataCollectorSvc' () process (ID: 1028) has open files. Close the process and restart Setup.

Client Access Role Prerequisites — Failed
Error: Setup cannot continue with the upgrade because the 'DataCollectorSvc' () process (ID: 1028) has open files. Close the process and restart Setup.

Mailbox Role Prerequisites — Failed
Error: Setup cannot continue with the upgrade because the 'DataCollectorSvc' () process (ID: 1028) has open files. Close the process and restart Setup.

(The process ID will vary.)

This may be resolved by restarting the Windows SBS Manager service using the Services.msc applet. Or, from an elevated command prompt:

net stop DataCollectorSvc
net start DataCollectorSvc

Rollup Updates

When applying a Rollup, you may receive the following error:

The following applications are using files that need to be updated by this setup. Close those applications and then click Retry to continue the installation or Cancel to exit it. Windows SBS Manager (Process Id: nnnn).

If applying the update via Windows Update, the update will silently fail.

To resolve, either:

1. Click Ignore; the update will continue but will require a reboot when completed,

or

1. From an elevated command prompt, enter:

   net stop DataCollectorSvc

2. Choose Retry.

3. Restart the service when the update is completed:

   net start DataCollectorSvc
