Microsoft Outlook — Errors When Sending Email

  1. When sending email, you may receive the error 0x80040201 when sending to certain recipients. Sending email to other recipients works.

This may happen if you addressed the message using a stored nickname, which is incorrectly formatted, corrupt or damaged.

  2. After sending an email to a recipient, the message immediately bounces back with a non-delivery receipt (NDR) containing: “None of your e-mail accounts could send to this recipient”.

The copy of the message in the Sent Items folder shows the properties of the recipient as being E-mail type: MAILTO instead of SMTP:

This may occur if the message was addressed using a stored nickname entry, which was created after sending a message by clicking on a MAILTO: hyperlink on a webpage.

To resolve, delete the nickname, then address the message by entering the address manually or selecting from a contact.
