Windows 8: Survival Guide

Where Are All My Applications?

The new shell interface of Windows 8 is the “Metro” tiles. To see all the applications on the system, right-click somewhere on the screen. Then click All Apps from the popup bar. The Metro interface will show all the installed programs. Use the mouse wheel to scroll left and right.

How Do I Shut Down or Reboot?

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, use the Power icon.

Can I Have The Start Menu Back?

Yes, in a way. There's an excellent freeware project called Classic Shell. It provides options for various Start Menu styles such as Windows 9x/2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista/7.

What's a Quick Way to Search?

Press Windows Key-W.

What Happened to Shadow Copies (Restore Previous Versions)?

Unlike Windows 7, Windows 8 does not keep file snapshots on the same volume as the files, only system snapshots. So it is only possible to use system recovery options to roll back the operating system, not individual data files. The equivalent feature is now called File History and requires an external hard disk.

I Have Just Bought Windows 7, Can I Upgrade?

If you purchased a new computer with Microsoft Windows 7 preinstalled between 2 June 2012 and January 31 2013, you can order an upgrade to Windows 8 Professional for $14.99 via http://www.windowsupgradeoffer.com. Claims must be submitted by 28 February 2013. For information and conditions, see http://windowsupgradeoffer.com/en/Home/Faq.

(If you missed your Windows 8 upgrade, you'll probably be offered a free upgrade to Windows 10 anyway.)
