Cannot Use Remote Desktop via Small Business Server (SBS) Remote Workplace

When attempting to use Remote Workplace to connect to a computer, you may encounter the following issues:

  • The Connect to a Computer option does not appear; or

  • When attempting to use Connect to a Computer, you receive the message “The wizard cannot configure Remote Desktop Connection Settings. Make sure that the client version of Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 6.0 or later is installed on this computer”.

This occurs because Remote Workplace is incompatible with versions of Internet Explorer later than 8 or 9.

To resolve:

  1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools and choose Compatibility View Settings.

  2. Add the Remote Workplace site to the list.

  3. Click Close.

  4. Under the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.

  5. Click the Security tab.

  6. Click Trusted Sites.

  7. Click the Sites button

  8. Add the website to the list.

  9. Click Close.

If you also find that the Remote Desktop ActiveX Control won't run (disabled), you can enable it via the Add-Ons applet or use:

reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{7390f3d8-0439-4c05-91e3-cf5cb290c3d0}\iexplore" /v Flags /d 4 /t REG_DWORD /f
