Case Study: Mouse Stuck In Corner

Scenario:

  • Hewlett Packard ProBook 430 G5, Windows 10 1803

  • Mouse does not move from a small area at the bottom left of the display — an area of a few dozen pixels. Mouse action is erratic and can't be controlled in any case.

  • Neither touchpad nor external mouse work

  • Also doesn't work over TeamViewer

  • Disabling touchpad does not help

  • Removing USB mouse does not help

  • Removing devices and reinstalling/updating drivers does not help

  • Changing user profiles does not help

  • However mouse works properly through an inbound Remote Desktop connection

We found the mouse was not at fault as it worked properly in the laptop's BIOS setup. After some tinkering with settings, we disabled the Left USB in the BIOS and this resolved the issue. An inexpensive, unbranded USB hub had been used in that port so we surmise some sort of physical or electrical damage which was causing a problem across the entire USB bus.

Do not disable all USB ports via the BIOS as this disables all mouse and keyboard input.

If you suspect a similar fault, it may be possible to configure the USB ports remotely using the Hewlett Packard BIOS Configuration Utility.
