Daylight Savings Changes in 2006

In March 2006, Melbourne is hosting the Commonwealth Games and New South Wales, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and Tasmania are extending daylight savings time to accommodate it.

This means that Windows will automatically alter the time on the wrong day.

Note that programs which have their own time zone information (such as Microsoft Exchange, Outlook Web Access and Microsoft Schedule+) will not be “fixed” by these changes and for the week between the original end date (27/03/2006) and the new end date (02/04/2006) you may have to suffer with the wrong times in the application.

Windows 2000/XP/2003

Download the patches from Windows Update, or use the following direct download links: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003. (Click the appropriate link, choose Run or Open when prompted and follow the patch setup.)

These patches update the timezone information for the current year.

When the daylight savings period has ended, Microsoft will issue a new update which undoes the changes. (Or you can manually uninstall the “KB912475” update.)

If you apply the patch after 26 March 2006 and the clock does not update properly, perform the following:

1. Double-click the date in the taskbar.

2. Click the Time Zone tab.

3. Choose a different time zone (it does not matter which), and click Apply.

   The clock will change to reflect the time zone chosen.

4. Choose your actual time zone, and click OK.

   The clock should now show the correct time.
