Adobe PDF Printer Creates Unreadable Characters

When printing a webpage to the Adobe Acrobat PDF printer, the resulting PDF contains unreadable characters, for example:

This occurs when the website uses custom embedded fonts (rather than relying on the fonts on the client's system), and the fonts cannot be embedded.

To resolve, untick “Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts” in the Properties (or Preferences) of the Adobe PDF printer:
