Cannot Access Hotmail/Outlook/Live.com Mailbox

You may be unable to access your live.com, outlook.com, hotmail.com or msn.com mailbox; your device continually prompts for a password and re-entering the password does not work.

This may occur if your system is accessing the mailbox via POP and/or using old settings.

Microsoft's legacy free mailboxes are being migrated to the new Outlook.com platform and POP access is being turned off by default, so rather than use the accounts as POP accounts, they should be used as Exchange/ActiveSync (EAS) or IMAP mailboxes.

Alternatively if you wish to use the service as a POP account you must log in, go to OptionsMailAccountsPOP and IMAP and set Let devices and apps use POP to Enabled. Then update your device with the appropriate POP account settings if necessary.

On iOS (iPhone/iPad), delete the existing mail account entry and add it back as per Configuring Outlook Anywhere/Office 365 with iPhone/iPad.

For email cllients, the settings are:

  • POP — pop-mail.outlook.com, port 995

  • IMAP — imap-mail.outlook.com, port 993

  • Exchange ActiveSync — outlook.office365.com, port 443

  • SMTP — smtp-mail.outlook.com, port 587
