Windows Vista/2008: General All-Purpose Miracle Cure For Many Bizarre Problems

In Windows Vista/2008 and above, you may encounter the following problems:

  • The Network and Sharing Centre shows “Server Execution Failed” and some network functions do not work, such as file sharing;

  • Terminal Services/Remote Desktop starts but does not listen on the specified port;

  • Client systems attempting to connect to the VPN receive “Error 800. The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the security parameters required for IPsec negotiation might not be configured properly”.

Some of these may be resolved by adding the built-in user accounts Local Service and Network Service to the Administrators group. Then reboot.

This can be done using Computer Management or via an elevated command prompt:

net localgroup "Administrators" "NT Authority\Local Service" /add
net localgroup "Administrators" "NT Authority\Network Service" /add
