Windows 10 Upgrade on New Windows 7 Systems

As of mid-2015, many business-oriented systems ship with a choice of 32- or 64-bit Windows 7 Professional from the recovery partition on the hard disk, or Windows 8.1 Pro DVD media which can be used if that operating system is required. We have previously recommended Windows 8.1 over Windows 7, and now recommend Windows 10 over Windows 8.1, since Windows 10 is the future of the platform.

Although a Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 upgrade is potentially simpler, because the latter is a much closer relative to Windows 8 than Windows 7, it is beneficial to be able to upgrade from a freshly-installed Windows 7 because the amount of time to boot the machine to a factory-install of Windows 7 is much less than loading a new operating systems from DVDs and then waiting while the machine re-images to Windows 8.1.

This turns out to be very straight-forward:

  1. Allow the new machine to install the desired version of Windows 7.

It is not necessary to install any Windows updates once the system has booted from it's out-of-box-experience (OOBE), or wait for the system to offer Windows 10.

  2. Use Windows 10 Media Creation Tool and choose Upgrade this PC now. (Direct links: 32-bit, 64-bit.)

  3. Follow the prompts and let the system reboot.

  4. When the upgrade completes, remove the previous operating system and remove any OEM-installed applications as required.

NB. We noticed that when Teamviewer Host was installed prior to the upgrade, it did not start after the Windows 10 upgrade was completed.
